Bomb scare on Varanasi-Bengaluru IndiGo flight: Canadian passenger detained for making threat

NEW DELHI: Panic erupted at Varanasi airport on Saturday night after a foreign national aboard a Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight claimed he was carrying a bomb, police said on Sunday. The passenger, identified as a Canadian citizen, has been detained, officials added.
The detainee is being questioned on the matter. A detailed probe has been ordered.
After the bomb scare, the aircraft was shifted to the isolation bay for a detailed inspection, but no explosives were discovered, said airport director Puneet Gupta. He said that IndiGo crew immediately alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC) after the passenger made the threat.
The flight was grounded and thoroughly inspected following standard security procedures. Officials said the aircraft was cleared by security agencies and departed for Bengaluru on Sunday morning.

'Virat Kohli and I have spoken about it so many times in last 5-6 years': KL Rahul opens up on IPL regret

NEW DELHI: KL Rahul recently opened up about one of his biggest regrets in the IPL, the 2016 final loss with Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Speaking on Star Sports, Rahul revealed that he and Virat Kohli have often discussed that heartbreak over the past five to six years.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!
“Virat and I have spoken about it many times. If one of us had played a little longer and won that game, it would have been very different. And winning an IPL is so special. That 2016 season was very special for RCB. We were at the bottom of the table and had to win seven games in a row to qualify, and we did. We went on to win the eliminator and made it to the final,” Rahul recalled.
Chasing 209, RCB fell just eight runs short, finishing at 200 despite Kohli’s 54 off 35 balls and Rahul’s 11 off 9.
Rahul reflected on how close they were to scripting a fairy-tale ending. “If one of us had stayed longer, it could have been a very different story. Winning at home in Chinnaswamy would have been unforgettable,” he said.
Beyond the regret, Rahul spoke about how his time at RCB changed him as a cricketer. Having joined as a youngster, Rahul said he initially lacked belief in his white-ball skills. However, sharing a dressing room with legends like Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle had a massive impact on him.
“Watching how Virat, AB, and Chris trained and approached the game was the best learning experience. I picked up so much from them — from fitness to mental toughness,” Rahul said. He credited Kohli’s fitness journey for inspiring him to take training more seriously, which led to improved consistency across formats.

“From 2014-15 onwards, I started believing I could succeed in white-ball cricket too,” Rahul added, highlighting how RCB laid the foundation for his growth as an international cricketer.

Following their five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on Friday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad is headed to the Maldives for a quick retreat.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad social media team posted a 35-second video where the players can be seen enjoying their break in Maldives
The win at Chepauk has kept Sunrisers Hyderabad’s playoff hopes alive.
With the win, Sunrisers also ended their winless streak against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s next outing is on May 2 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Last year’s runners-up, Sunrisers, are currently languishing in eighth place with three wins in nine matches. To qualify for the playoffs, the Pat Cummins-led side can’t afford any hiccups and will have to win their next five games consecutively.
Who’s that IPL player?
Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori said that working around their batting lineup and getting the matchups right with Kamindu Mendis in the mix served the team well against Chennai Super Kings.

Sachin Tendulkar at 52: Power, Pride, and a Nation’s Pulse

“That’s why the likes of Kamindu came into the team. That’s why there was the shuffle in the batting order, putting Heinrich Klaasen up and Nitish Kumar Reddy down, to give us a more balanced approach, particularly in a chase,” he said.

Poll

Do you think Sunrisers Hyderabad will qualify for the playoffs this season?

“The initial plan revolved around left-right-hand combinations, partly to counter Noor Ahmad and Ravindra Jadeja and how good they are through those middle stages.”
“A lot of the logic behind picking him (Mendis) was specific to this ground. We knew what sort of surface we’d encounter, and having a batsman who can play all types of spin, be aggressive, and hit a multitude of shots was the starting point,” he added.

'India will hunt down terror': Himanta Biswa Sarma slams Bilawal Bhutto's remarks after Pahalgam attack
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma (File photo)

NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has responded strongly to Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s anti-India statements, declaring that India will “hunt down terror” following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
Responding to Bhutto Zardari’s comments after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Sarma referenced a video clip pointing to Pakistan’s violent history, which cost Bilawal his grandfather and mother. “Pakistan has a long and bloody history of betrayal — it claimed the lives of Bilawal Bhutto’s grandfather and mother. It is tragic that an unworthy son today chooses to dishonor their sacrifice. I extend my deepest condolences to him in advance, for the path he has chosen will only bring disgrace,” Sarma wrote in a post on X.
He added, “Let it be absolutely clear — no one can deter India from taking decisive action to safeguard its honour and people.”
Bilawal’s family history includes his mother, former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated, and his grandfather, former PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was executed by Pakistani authorities.
Sarma also said that India is committed to responding firmly in defense of its dignity and citizens, under PM Modi. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India will hunt down terror and eliminate terror infrastructure wherever it exists,” he said.
On the matter of the Indus Waters Treaty, Sarma stated, “India’s national security is non-negotiable. The waters of the Indus are ours — and they will remain ours, unchallenged and eternal.”
India has officially notified Pakistan of the immediate suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, citing Pakistan’s violations of the agreement. India’s Secretary of Water Resources, Debashree Mukherjee, informed her Pakistani counterpart, Syed Ali Murtaza, that Pakistan’s ongoing cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir violates India’s rights under the treaty.
This comes after terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 people. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened to address the gravity of the attack. Following deliberations, the committee reached a significant decision regarding the Indus Water Treaty of 1960. The treaty will be suspended with immediate effect and shall remain so until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism,” announced India.

Social activist shot by suspected terrorists in Kupwara amid high security alert in Valley
High security alert in J&K

NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old social activist was injured after being shot by suspected terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said on Sunday.
The activist, identified as Ghulam Rasool Magray, was attacked late Saturday night inside his residence in Kandi Khas area.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said the motive behind the attack is still unclear.
The shooting comes at a time when security has been heightened across the Valley following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. In that incident, 26 people were killed when terrorists opened fire at Baisaran meadows, a popular tourist destination in the picturesque town of Pahalgam.
The Pahalgam attack is being described as one of the deadliest terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, which killed 40 CRPF personnel.
It also marks one of the biggest attacks in the region since the abrogation of Article 370.
Security forces remain on high alert in the Valley.

Centre bars live media coverage of defence operations

NEW DELHI: Citing past incidents – Kargil War, 26/11 attack and Kandahar hijacking – where media coverage severely impacted security operations, Centre on Saturday issued a strong advisory to media outlets, urging them to refrain from live coverage of defence operations and troop movements. With tensions escalating following the Pahalgam attack, I&B ministry’s advisory warned that real-time reporting could “inadvertently assist hostile elements” & endanger national security. tnn
Advisory signals growing concern over fast-paced, unregulated flow of info
The Union government said: “In the interest of national security, all media platforms, news agencies, and social media users are advised to exercise utmost responsibility and adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations while reporting on matters concerning defence and other security-related operations.”
Government specifically barred “real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or reporting based on ‘sources-based’ information related to defence operations or movement”, emphasising that premature disclosure of sensitive details could compromise operational success and put personnel at risk.
Saturday’s advisory signals growing concern over the fast-paced, unregulated flow of information in the current media ecosystem – especially on digital and social media platforms, where battlefield visuals and operational updates often surface before official confirmations.
According to senior officials, there are several legal provisions which already regulate sensitive reporting, including the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act and provisions under the Disaster Management Act and “the advisory subtly warned that violations could attract action”.
Security experts say the move was inevitable after images, videos and speculative reports flooded news channels and social media following the Pahalgam attack, with some inadvertently revealing movement of reinforcements and counter-terror preparations.
Though the advisory stops short of imposing a complete ban on defence reporting, it underlines that the media must balance public interest with operational sensitivity. “Utmost responsibility” is the key, govt said, in an atmosphere where any careless dissemination could be weaponised by adversaries.

Safety first: Govt mulls mandatory ABS for all two-wheelers above 50cc | India News https://create.bagavat.in/safety-first-govt-mulls-mandatory-abs-for-all-two-wheelers-above-50cc-india-news/ https://create.bagavat.in/safety-first-govt-mulls-mandatory-abs-for-all-two-wheelers-above-50cc-india-news/#respond Sat, 26 Apr 2025 20:11:20 +0000 https://create.bagavat.in/safety-first-govt-mulls-mandatory-abs-for-all-two-wheelers-above-50cc-india-news/ Read more]]>

Safety first: Govt mulls mandatory ABS for all two-wheelers above 50cc

NEW DELHI: Government is considering making anti-lock braking systems (ABS) mandatory for all two-wheelers with engine capacity above 50cc. At present, ABS is only required in motorcycles over 125cc. This safety feature helps prevent wheel lock-up during sudden braking, enhancing control and reducing stopping distances, especially on slippery roads.
Experts from India and abroad have emphasised the need for this provision, in addition to the mandatory wearing of helmets for all two-wheeler occupants — which is currently enforced, to reduce deaths and serious injuries. Two-wheeler riders are among the most vulnerable road users after pedestrians and cyclists, as they have little to no protection.
“Since ABS has been a successful intervention to reduce the risk of road crashes and fatalities involving two-wheelers and fatalities, this should be a feature in all motorised two-wheelers above 50cc,” said David Ward of Global New Car Assessment Programme at a conference on ‘Vehicle and Fleet Safety’ at the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE). Safe technological systems, including ABS for all two-wheelers, cannot be ignored, he added.
Road safety expert Rohit Baluja highlighted the need to include two-wheelers in transport planning since they constitute 74% of all vehicles in India and 44% people killed on roads are two-wheeler occupants.
“Today, we only talk about putting helmets on two-wheeler riders. Is the helmet the only answer? Has anyone spoken about the transportation planning to reduce the number of these two-wheelers in the country? Two-wheelers are sandwiched between other vehicles due to poor traffic and transport planning… Powered two-wheelers destroy road discipline of all users and there is a need to address their requirement while planning and building roads,” Baluja said. He added that there is a need to have dedicated driving lanes for two-wheelers.
President emeritus of International Road Federation, K K Kapila, said two-wheelers are the lifeline of major cities, despite improvement in public transport, and the only solution is to find ways and means to make them safe with use of technology.

'Teaching lesson to hooligans a religion', says RSS chief amid Indo-Pak tension
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat (PTI photo)

NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said India has “non-violence” in nature, but if someone “turns to evil”, teaching a lesson is also a religion.
Bhagwat’s remark comes as the nation seethes over the killing of 26 people, mostly tourists, by the Pakistan-backed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.
“Non-violence is our nature, our value… But some people will not change, no matter what you do, they will keep troubling the world, so what to do about it? … Non-violence is our religion. Teaching a lesson to hooligans is also our religion. We never insult or harm our neighbours. But still, if someone turns to evil, what is the other option? The duty of the king is to protect the people, the king must perform his duty,” the RSS chief was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
On Thursday, Bhagwat said terrorists killed people in Pahalgam after asking about their religion, and Hindus would never do such a thing. “We hope for a strong response,” he said at a public event.
“People were killed after being asked about their religion. Hindus would never do such a thing,” the RSS chief said, adding “the battle is between dharma and adharma.”
“There is pain in our hearts. We are angry. But to destroy evil, strength must be shown. Ravana refused to change his mind, and there was no other option. Ram killed him only after giving him a chance to reform,” he said.
The RSS chief also said that unity within society was essential to prevent such tragedies and deter malicious intent.
“If we are united, no one will dare to look at us with ill intentions. And if someone does, their eye will be smashed. We hope for a strong response,” he said. “Hatred and hostility are not in our nature. But neither is silently enduring harm. A truly non-violent person must also be strong. If there is no strength, there is no choice. But when there is strength, it must be visible when needed,” he stated.

On the evolving nature of T20 cricket, Rinku backed the possibility of a team breaching the 300-run barrier in the IPL. “Yes, we can do it. IPL has reached a stage where even 300 is possible. Last year, Punjab chased 262. All teams are strong this season — anyone can get to 300,” he said.
